QQQ noon check: ride a 1% move from the open into the close
At noon New York time, if QQQ is already up (or down) 1% or more from its open, trade in that direction and exit at the close.
What they did
BacktestingMax looked at the Nasdaq-100 from 2015 to 2025 and checked where it stood versus its opening price at 12:00 New York time, then where it closed.
How it went
Per the author: on the 206 days it was up 1% or more from the open at noon, it closed above the open on 193 (94%). On the 225 days it was down 1% or more at noon, it closed below the open on 211 (94%).

Worth knowing
- This measures whether the close stays on the same side of the open, not how much is left to gain after noon. The afternoon move can be small or partly reverse while still finishing above the open.
- No trade rules, costs or P/L are given: this is a statistic, not a tested strategy. Paper-test before trusting it.
- About 431 signal days in 11 years, roughly 40 a year.
- With 0DTE options the decay works for or against you all afternoon. Start with shares or ETF units.
The prompt
Intraday rule on [QQQ], paper account only.
1. Record QQQ's opening price at 9:30 AM ET.
2. At [12:00 PM ET], compute the move from the open: (price − open) / open.
3. If the move is ≥ +[1.0]% and I'm flat, propose buying $[amount] of QQQ (or, if I say so, a [call / call debit spread] expiring today).
4. If the move is ≤ −[1.0]% and I'm flat, propose the short side: [short QQQ / buy a put / put debit spread / skip shorts].
5. Protective stop: exit if price crosses back through the day's opening price [or my own stop: X%].
6. Otherwise close the position at [3:55 PM ET]. Never hold overnight.
If the move at noon is smaller than 1% either way, do nothing and say so.
Each day log: open, noon price, noon move %, signal (long/short/none), exit price and P/L.
Every Friday report how often the close stayed on the signal's side of the open and the average P/L per trade.
SAFETY DEFAULTS (keep unless you deliberately change them):
- Use the PAPER trading account only. Never touch a live account.
- Before every order, show me: symbol, side, size, order type, limit price, stop, and the rule that triggered it. Then WAIT for my "approve".
- Hard limits: max [$500] per trade, max [3] open positions, stop all trading for the day after a loss of [$300].
- Log every signal, decision and fill to [a running log / spreadsheet] with timestamps. To go fully autonomous: (1) run on paper for at least [4–8 weeks] or [30+ trades]; (2) delete the 'WAIT for my approve' line and keep the hard limits; (3) switch to live keys or account. On Robinhood, turn off trade approvals in your agent settings, but note that some orders can still require in-app approval or acknowledging a pre-trade alert, so unattended execution isn't guaranteed for every order. On IBKR, standard AI Integration asks for approval on every order. Its new Autonomous Trading mode (eligible individual non-margin accounts, after 10 approved trades) lets the AI trade a funded AI Partition without per-order approval. Never remove the daily loss limit.
